Stewart
Island
An hour by ferry
or 20 minutes by plane, Stewart Island is the
southern most Island of New Zealand. It is an unspoilt paradise covered
in lush native bush, rainforests and rugged coastlines. Home
to the Kiwi, Stewart Island is protected by Rakiura National Park that
covers 85% of the Island.
The Stewart Island community has a strong awareness and desire to
protect its environment and natural assets. The population of
around 400 residents support the Island’s fishing,
aquaculture, tourism and conservation industries. Many operators are
working towards sustainability and encourage visitors to practice
conservation, especially the use of water and power.
Salmon and mussels are farmed and processed on Stewart Island and can be visited by sea taxi. Other
seafood such as rock lobster and paua (abalone) and not forgetting our famous muttonbirds are gathered and can be
enjoyed at the restaurants and cafes on the Island.
Charters can take you along some of New Zealand’s
most spectacular coast lines, for fishing, hunting, snorkelling and
diving or to drop you off for a day walk back to Oban. There are a
variety of operators and guides to help you explore unique Ulva
Island, a predator free bird sanctuary well known by bird lovers from
all over the world. Numerous bays and beaches
provide great kayaking or exploration where forest meets the
sea. Tramping tracks cover the island offering a range of
walks from excellent 1 and 2 hour walks, half-day adventures to full
day tramps, the popular 3 day Rakiura Track to the 10 day circuit.
There is also a combination fight//tramp/boat trip available that can
be commenced from either Invercargill or Stewart Island. Several
swimming beaches make Stewart Island a seaside holiday destination for
familiies.
Discover the rich Maori, fishing, whaling, sealing and mining history
of Stewart Island. A morning visit to the Museum will complete an
historical picture of this unique island and you can fill in a day
around town, visiting galleries, aquarium, watching seal visitors and
enjoy a broad range of food and coffee from various cafes. An
excellent information centre will organize and book your activities.
